Propecia is a medical therapy for treating male-pattern baldness, hair loss which occurs at the top of the head and/or involves a receding hairline. It is particularly useful if you are an adult male who has just started to bald, but has not reached a stage where more complex hair restoration procedures are indicated.
Testosterone (a male sex hormone), which produces male characteristics, such as a deep voice and characteristic hair distribution, converts to a more potent form called dihydrotestosterone in male pattern baldness, which causes hair follicles to shrink in size resulting in hair loss. The drug Propecia acts by preventing this conversion; thereby arresting hair loss and promoting hair growth. Propecia is a once-a-day prescription oral medication. Side effects may include a decrease in sexual function. Propecia is indicated for men only and should not be used by women or children.
